Our Programs

ReclaimingSTEM Institute engages in scientific communication and leadership, through workshops, lectures, publications, and awards. We also aim to conduct research, policy analysis, and advocacy.

Workshops:

Our interactive workshops are dynamic and unique, and can teach members of your organization the communication and public leadership skills that will enable them to be effective change leaders.

ReclaimingSTEM Science Communication and Policy Workshops:

Reclaiming STEM was founded to address the need for science communication and science policy training spaces for people who identify as minoritized groups: BIPOC, first-generation, disabled, LGBTQIA+, undocumented, etc. We organize training for diverse scientists to learn how to communicate their science at the intersection of research and social justice. The increasing diversity of scientists requires training that accounts for the challenges minoritized groups face. Our programming seeks and invites only scientists from diverse backgrounds to present interactive and innovative workshops centering their stories. Our mission is for attendees to not only gain skills but also be able to identify with and envision themselves in science communication and science policy spaces. Public Scholarship and Climate Justice Workshop:

These workshops are based on Dr. Myhre's experience and vetting as a public advocate, and the advanced training she received at the Mitchel Hamline College of Law, the Switzer Environmental Leadership Fellowship, and her expertise as a National Academy of Science Kavli Fellow. Sarah leads groups through interactive learning exercises that allow participants to evaluate leadership and communication challenges using a lens of equity and data to influence outcomes and reframe public discourse. Sarah has provided training for the American Geophysical Union, the Union of Concerned Scientists, the North American Conservation Congress, University of Washington, Environmental Defense Fund, and the North Cascades Institute. We can tailor a program to suit the specific communicative and leadership needs of your organization.

Lectures:

We are a group of scientists, public scholars, and social justice activists who help organizations, businesses, and community groups use scientific data and a blend of equity and integrity to drive positive change and strategic success. We also guide and advise organizations towards inclusive planning designs. Our scientists have given talks at conferences and conventions such as TEDx, American Geophysical Union, Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in STEM, the Ecological Society of America, and several other public university seminars.

Awards:

We aim to provide awards to recognize leadership from early and mid-career STEM public leaders, who are working at the intersection of justice, science, community building, and decision-making. Past awards include the Grassroots Climate Leadership Awards of 2020. The goal of this award was to uphold and celebrate public leadership that is stewarding a just and equitable climate transition. Climate leadership has historically been dominated by a very narrow set of identities and perspectives, mainly from white scientists, business leaders, and politicians from the global North. This narrowness of focus and gatekeeping produces a climate leadership community that lacks the lived experience, connection to place and community, and movement-building skills that are all necessary to effect change. The conversations you are starting and addressing need to be out in the light because this is about more than science. Now that someone I greatly respect has looked me in the eyes and said “You matter, this struggle matters” I feel like I don’t have to pretend that this pain doesn’t exist.
