RSI Seeks Board Members

ReclaimingSTEM Institute (RSI) is recruiting applicants to join our Board of Directors. We welcome candidates who want to support a new organization’s growth, mentor early career leaders, and expand our reach across STEM institutions.

RSI Background

MISSION
The mission of ReclaimingSTEM Institute is to build leadership and communication skills with marginalized scientists, in order for scientists and scientific institutions to address, repair, and heal from historical and ongoing systems of oppression.

GOALS
Train public leaders to function in today’s world through integrating scholarship and social justice into public leadership at all levels.

Teach STEM (science, technology, education, and math) and education professionals how to communicate complex, socially-vital information, with the goal of protecting public interests and reducing risk and cost. 

Prepare organizations to incorporate equity and data-driven insights into their strategy, leadership, and public communication.

Your opportunity

An ideal board candidate will:

  • Must be invested in a reparative, collaborative approach to leadership and consensus processes

  • Have 5 years of experience as nonprofit executive staff or board director

  • Have a STEM or academic background, or tangential experience to working within STEM institutions

  • Have experience as a supportive mentor for early career leaders

Responsibilities may include:

  • Organizing quarterly virtual board meetings

  • Leading strategic planning for staff (Executive and Associate Directors)

  • Providing board members with opportunities to grow and develop as leaders

  • Developing personnel policies and compensation

  • Assisting in the development of the annual budget

  • Establishing plans to improve board processes

  • Ensuring legal and ethical integrity and maintain accountability to 501(c)(3) guidelines

  • Expected time commitment: 3-4 hours a month

  • Location: U.S based, remote

  • Positions to be filled include: President and Vice President (please see below for position descriptions). 

Please know that the ability to donate to RSI is not expected of board members.

Compensation

Honoraria-based. The officers shall receive no compensation for their service but may receive reimbursement for reasonable expenditures incurred on behalf of the corporation. 

President:

The President shall preside over meetings of the Board.   In general, the President shall perform all duties incident to the office of President and such other duties as are assigned to them by the Board from time to time.

Vice President:

The Vice President shall perform such other duties as from time to time may be assigned to them by the President or by the Board. In the event of the death of the President or their inability to act, the Vice President shall perform the duties of the President, except as may be limited by resolution of the Board, with all the powers of and subject to all the restrictions upon the President.  The Vice President shall have, to the extent authorized by the President or the Board, the same powers as the President to sign deeds, mortgages, bonds, contracts or other instruments.
